In collaboration, French green hydrogen producer Lhyfe, Finnish Flexens, and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) have initiated a groundbreaking project, the Öland Energy Island Project, designed to pave the way for large-scale hydrogen production integrated with gigawatt-scale offshore wind in the Öland region of Finland. This visionary endeavor, developed in close coordination with local authorities and stakeholders, represents a significant step toward achieving regional offshore wind energy goals while supporting the broader European energy transition.
"The development of the Åland Island Energy Project will provide an increasingly valuable route to market for regional offshore wind energy that supports Åland's ambitions for local value and job creation, as well as supporting the energy transition and energy independence in the wider region," stated Thomas Dalsgaard, Partner at CIP.
The consortium partners, each contributing their unique expertise, are set to make this ambitious venture a reality. CIP, with its wealth of experience, will act as one of the leading fund managers, Flexens brings local knowledge in hydrogen project development, and Lhyfe contributes its proficiency in internal and external operations and design.
Earlier this year, Lhyfe acquired a 49% stake in Flexens, marking a significant milestone in their collaboration. These two companies, with a history of working together on joint projects since 2020, are now pooling their resources and commercial pipelines to accelerate existing initiatives and explore new opportunities in Northern Europe.
Notably, Lhyfe operates the world's first offshore hydrogen production plant, Sealhyfe, powered by floating wind turbines. This platform commenced hydrogen production in June, marking a crucial step towards green hydrogen production at sea, and this venture signifies a promising future for sustainable energy solutions.
