Qatar Airways Group chief executive Akbar Al Baker is stepping down after 27 years leading the company.

Akbar Al Baker, the longstanding CEO of Qatar Airways, will officially retire on November 5th, marking the end of an illustrious 27-year journey at the helm of the renowned airline. The succession plan has been set in motion, with Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, the current chief operating officer of Hamad International Airport in Doha, Qatar's flagship carrier hub, slated to take the reins.

Throughout his tenure, Al Baker has played a pivotal role in steering Qatar Airways to prominence, transforming it into a major global carrier that competes fiercely with the likes of Dubai's Emirates and Turkish Airlines. The airline's growth and accomplishments under his leadership have earned it international recognition and trust.

Qatar Airways has been lauded with numerous accolades, including the prestigious "World's Best Airline" title on seven occasions, among other notable achievements. Al Baker assumed the position of CEO in 1997, just three years following the airline's establishment, and his vision and dedication have been integral to its success.

The company recently reported a substantial profit of $1.2 billion for the previous fiscal year, with a significant boost attributed to Qatar's role as the host nation for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. In terms of revenue, Qatar Airways recorded a remarkable figure of $20.9 billion for the fiscal year, reflecting substantial growth from $14.4 billion the preceding year. This financial success underscores the airline's continued growth and success in the competitive aviation industry.
