The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced the prohibition of Reynolds American's Vuse Alto menthol e-cigarettes, citing that the potential risks to children outweigh any potential benefits for adult smokers.

This regulatory action by the FDA encompasses three menthol-flavored and three mixed berry-flavored e-cigarette products, each available in three different nicotine strengths. The FDA is also deliberating on whether Reynolds should be allowed to continue selling its tobacco-flavored e-cigarette products.

Reynolds American, renowned for producing Camel and Newport cigarettes, has argued that their vaping pens assist adult smokers in transitioning away from traditional cigarettes, offering a less harmful alternative to safeguard their health.

In response to the FDA's decision, Reynolds' parent company, British American Tobacco (BAT), has expressed its intention to contest the ruling in court. Kingsley Wheaton, BAT's Chief Strategy and Growth Officer, emphasized in a press release that they firmly believe in the importance of appropriately regulated flavored vaping products, including menthol, as they play a vital role in helping adult smokers transition away from combustible cigarettes.

Over the years, vaping pens have gained significant popularity among adolescents and teenagers. According to a federal survey published in 2022, nearly 13% of middle- and high-school students who had vaped in the past 30 days identified Vuse as their preferred brand, ranking second only to Puff Bar.

It's worth noting that the FDA previously ordered Juul Labs to cease selling their vaping products last year. However, this ban was temporarily halted while Juul appealed the decision, and the legal challenge is still ongoing.
