As the crisp autumn air begins to make its presence known, it's a clear signal that Peanut Butter Festival season is upon us! Since its inception in 1991, the charming City of Brundidge has been enthusiastically celebrating its rich heritage in the peanut butter industry. Brundidge boasts the honor of hosting two of the earliest commercial peanut butter mills in the nation. One of these iconic establishments, the Johnston Peanut Butter Mill, opened its doors on Little Wall Street in Brundidge in the year 1928, and in no time, it was producing a staggering two million jars of this beloved spread each year. Not far behind, the Louis-Anne Peanut Butter Company emerged on the south end of town just a couple of years later.
Brundidge continued to be a hub for peanut butter production until the late 1950s. Given this remarkable historical backdrop, the Brundidge Historical Society takes immense pride in presenting the Peanut Butter Festival on the last Saturday of every October. Preparations are already in full swing for this year's festivities, promising a delightful blend of old-time music, captivating demonstrations, an array of arts and crafts, engaging contests, a spirited 5-K Peanut Butter Run, the iconic Nutter Butter Parade, and, naturally, a tantalizing selection of festival foods! Although the festival is still a few weeks away, Cathie Steed, the chairperson responsible for booth reservations, reports that booth spaces are rapidly being claimed.
For those eager to showcase their arts and crafts, securing a booth comes at a fee of $60, while food vendors will find their space available for $100. Steed enthusiastically shared, "Our food booth slots are filling up rapidly, offering a diverse range of festival treats from the ever-popular funnel cakes to mouthwatering roasted corn and hearty turnip greens paired with cornbread." Applications for booth rentals can be conveniently obtained at Brundidge City Hall.
Steed further disclosed that the Peanut Butter Festival will be a hub of non-stop entertainment, featuring lively performances, toe-tapping music, and infectious dances on the central stage and throughout the festival grounds. Best of all, entry to the Peanut Butter Festival is entirely free, and everyone is cordially invited to join in the festivities and take a delightful step back in time to savor the fun and frolic of days gone by!
